Public servants demand ₦500 petrol, wage award as September 30 deadline expires
Public-sector workers under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) have threatened a three-day warning strike beginning Friday, October 2, 2026, if the Federal Government does not respond to their demands over petrol prices, wage relief and negotiations for a new minimum wage.
The workers are demanding that the Federal Government take steps to reduce the pump price of petrol to ₦500 per litre, approve an immediate wage award, and establish a tripartite committee to begin negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.
The JNPSNC said its September 30 deadline remains in effect and that public servants have been mobilised for the proposed industrial action if the government fails to address the demands.
The planned action comes as Nigerians prepare to mark the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1. President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to address Nigerians in a national broadcast at 7 a.m. on Thursday
