The initiation of the project was part of the present administration’s efforts to strengthen national security across 36 states of the country and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Ribadu described the initiative as one of several ongoing measures aimed at safeguarding communities and protecting the country’s natural reserves. The former EFCC boss assured Nigerians that the security of the nation is in capable hands, adding that there are daily improvements in the security sector, some of which may not be immediately visible to the public. “ The forest guards will be well-trained and armed, and they will be tasked with flushing out terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, illegal miners, and other criminal elements using Nigerian forests as hideouts. They will be mostly drawn from forest communities, given that they are familiar with the terrain, they would aid with surveillance and intelligence efforts, which the NSA has emphasized as our strategy for tackling insecurity. They will also be a sort of localized force in remote areas where conventional military and police presence is limited/ not able to access easily. 10,000 have been recently recruited. They were trained by Military and the Civil Defence as well as on inter-agency cooperation.”
