Running down your country will eventually hurt you !
It is truly unfortunate that the barrages of social media posts attacking the president and government, alongside the spread of unverified and false narratives about Nigeria, is tarnishing not just the nation’s image but also the global standing of all Nigerians, especially the aspirations of our young generation.
Just yesterday, I convened a comprehensive staff meeting in our company in response to an email from a prospective JV partner who retracted an investment and JV agreement with our company. The reason ? Negative social media portrayals of Nigeria, disseminated by Nigerians, which raises some question marks. We would not only have expanded our busines, we would also have made a direct employment of about 200 workers. All lost along with the investment inflows. Sad !
The consequences are not limited to businesses alone, they are extensive and impact us all.
Globally, Nigerians face more scrutiny when traveling, and new immigrants (Japas) often find themselves last in line for good jobs in Europe, the United States, and Canada.
At over 60, many of us have led fulfilling lives despite challenges. Why then should we misguide our children/young generation ? Teaching them to hate their leadership, country, and even themselves as Nigerians?
I strongly believe that a lot of us so called educated elites and elders should reassess our actions. Remember the adage, “What goes around, comes around.” Let’s not wait until it’s too late to recognize the folly of our ways.
As James Baldwin wisely noted, ”Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” Let us face these challenges with open hearts and minds and be an agent of change.
Lt me also add one of my favorite quotes, In the words of Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu,
“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.”
Let us guide our youths to build a bright future of hope and possibilities for themselves and country and let’s not guide them to taint it.
I am very positive, Nigeria will be great again.
